Seventy-Five Golfers Hit the Fairways for Cancer Care
They say golf is a good walk spoiled. Not for these ladies. Muskeg Meadows was washed over in pink last weekend, as participants swung in the sunshine to raise money for Wrangell Medical Center Foundation's Cancer Care program.
Sixty-two ladies hit the fairways on Saturday, August 11th (including 24 day-tripping from neighboring Petersburg), for a fun and frolic round of golf. Best ball rules applied during the 9-hole tournament, with the exception of three holes that gave way for the mimosa bar, sangria bar, and putting contest. No scorecards were tallied, with the only winner being the Cancer Care program.
On Sunday, the men took their turn, with a baker's dozen playing from way back at the pro tees. While there was less pink on the tee boxes, like the women the day prior, all proceeds went to the WMC Foundation's signature program.
Cancer Care is a grant program, providing residents of Southern Southeast Alaska (Petersburg/Kake and points South) limited financial grants to help cover expenses related to treatment outside of your community of residence. To date, WMC Foundation has awarded 77 individuals (some being granted more than once) just under $97,000 in grants.
The annual golf fundraiser would not be possible without the volunteers, participants and sponsors. Local individuals and businesses sponsoring holes this year include; Alaska Vistas, Alaska Imaging, Alpine Mini Mart, Angerman's Inc., AP&T, Buness Bros., First Bank, Grandview B&B, Rayme's Bar, A Bliss Design, and the trio of Betty Abbott, Kathy Sandness and Joey Woodbury. Champagne was donated by the Totem Bar, and Sangria's donated by the Stikine Inn. City Market donated the pork, Bobs' IGA donated buns, and Wayne Harding donated the time to put them together for pulled pork sandwiches. Breakaway Adventures worked a reduced rate to deliver and return our Petersburg golfers, and Gold Rush Tours donated the time and bus to transport them to-and-from the golf course. Lastly, to Muskeg Meadows for hosting yet another successful WMC Foundation fundraiser.
Thank you to all of the sponsors for making this event possible. Thank you to all who played and donated, especially those who made the boat ride over from Petersburg to support the cause. Thank you to the locals who set up, decorated, manned the refreshment tables, donated food, and cleaned up - you know who you are. Thank you to Vince Photography for the great photos. For those who we are forgetting, thank you for chipping in. We'll see you all again next year.
