Health Fair Blood Draws Began February 27, 2017
February 2017 - It's been a long winter but, though blueberry buds and crocus may be a while off still, the first signs of spring are just around the corner. The Health Fair Blood Draws began February 27 and continue through March 24.
This year, with recent (temporary) changes in the lab department, the 'extended hours' for lab draws are confined to the first two Wednesdays (March 1 and 8) when the lab will open early - at 7 am - in addition to their normal hours of 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday.
As in years past, locals are able to take advantage of the special "Health Fair Blood Draw" rate of just $25/test. Five tests are offered:
Health Profile: includes a coronary risk profile, including your cholesterol, plus a blood count.
Hemoglobin A1C: This test is useful for monitoring the long-term care of persons with diabetes and is helpful in diagnosis for pre-diabetes.
TSH: a thyroid function screen.
Vitamin D: this test determines your vitamin D level.
PSA (Prostatic Specific Antigen): Many men have had this test and you may be considering having it done. When digital rectal exam and the PSA are used together, they may help identify men with prostate disease.
Dates and times for this year's blood draws can be found on the Blood Draw Calendar along with more information about the blood tests and instructions for fasting.
Health Fair committee member, Kris Reed, encourages folks to take advantage of the low price and availability of the tests, "but don't put off having your lab tests done - it's a short wait early in the month but gets longer the closer we get to the cutoff on March 24th," she warns.
Blood draw results will be available for folks at the Nolan Center during the Health Fair, or will be mailed out after the event. They will include a second copy for attendees to give to their provider (so please remember to bring that with you to your next doctor's visit).
The Health Fair will also run a little later this year, beginning at 9 am on Saturday, April 1 and lasting until 1 pm so that folks who work on Saturday may be able to attend during their lunch breaks.
